Adjustable gastric banding procedures serve only to restrict and decrease food intake and do not interfere with the normal digestive process. For this reason, the band is merely a tool. The patient must make the correct food choices and work with the band for optimal results.
In this procedure, a hollow band made of special material is placed around the stomach near its upper end, creating the small pouch and a narrow passage into the larger remaining portion of the stomach. This small passage delays the emptying of food from the pouch and causes a feeling of fullness. Tubing connects the band to the port which is placed in the abdominal cavity for easy access when fluid pressure changes are required post-op. The band can be tightened or loosened from time-to-time to change the the passage opening size.
